Kanye West Disses Taylor Swift, Ruins VMAs

I never thought I would say this, but I am SICK of Kanye West!

Wow, I really typed that. I am the guy who purchased Yeezy's last two albums, and not from a barber shop. I tried to ride with him on the Auto-Tune, even though I thought he didn't need it. I wanted him to end 50 Cent's career last year. I wore Bathing Ape sneakers and Polo sweaters, much because of his influence. And like his most loyal fans have done, I defended the hissy fits that he threw at award shows. Except the one that aired last night.

I tuned in to the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. As expected, the show kicked off with a tribute to Michael Jackson. His sister Janet did a very moving performance of their "Scream" duet. So the tone was set nicely for the evening. Even Russell Brand seemed less annoying than usual. Then it's time for the "Best Female Video" award. I never seen any of these videos, so I had no clue who was going to win, but I assumed it would be either Pink or Lady Gaga.

Instead, country star Taylor Swift gets the win. She begins with what seems to be a gracious speech. Her competitors such as Pink appear to be happy for her. Out of thin air, Kanye pops on stage and steals her microphone from her hand. I half-expected him to jokingly say, "I deserve this Best Female Video Award" or something to that nature. But instead, we get this:

"Yo, Taylor! I'm really happy for you, I'm gonna let you finish... but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time... the best videos of all time!"

I was floored. The camera switched to Bee as she sat looking shocked and confused. And the entire Radio City Music Hall was filled with boos and howls, something that continued for the entire night. Kanye himself was nominated for "Video of The Year", "Best Male Video", and "Best Hip Hop Video". Whenever Yeezy's face or name was shown on the monitors, the crowd errupted with loud booing. Also, when Diddy mentioned Kanye's name, the crowd again booed, leaving Diddy to respond, "What did I say?!" Essentially, the show was tainted. According to Mtv.com, many attendees such as Pink, Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson hopped on their Twitter pages after the show and started an anti-Kanye assault. Can't say that I blame them.

In a hero-like moment, Beyoncé, who won "Video of the Year", invited Swift back to the stage to finish the speech that Kanye ruined, which received cheers and applause. But at this point, the damage had been done. For remainder of the show, my mind kept turning back to what was a very terrible moment. It was an insult to black fans, female fans, pop fans, and general watchers of MTV.

The network has reported that Kanye was asked to leave the event after the incident. But is that enough? Who is to say it won't happen again next year? I really don't want to see Kanye on TV right now. I guess he learned nothing from the "Gay Fish" parody that he got from South Park. In fact, I really wouldn't care if he got a lifetime ban from MTV. The VMAs is one of my favorite award shows, because you get to hear so many different kinds of music. I hope they make sure that this kind of nonsense doesn't happen in 2010.
